Its no surprise that water is the best thing for Sickle Cell.
Actually everything begins and ends with water.
For those who are familiar with Sickle Cell know that water does help prevent and manage sickle cell crises. If you have ever visited the emergency room because of Sickle Cell crises, the doctors give you water. Depending on the how severe you are, there’s almost always an IV line added.
Water helps treat crises by clearing jaundice, increasing haemoglobin and facilitating proper circulation and oxygen addition. It most importantly acts as a catalyst for major processes in the body.
However knowing this, we, sickle cell warriors still have a hard time keeping up with our water intake. Why is that? Water not tasty enough for you?!
In my experience, I have programmed myself to take water. So much so that now water has become my favorite drink. However since i take so much water, I felt that perhaps I could also add to and elevate the water somehow to get even more nutrients out of it.
Well, I started experimenting with different fruits, herbs, vegetables etc until I found the best combinations targeted for Sickle Cell management. Something easy and accessible to most people.
Today I will share the 3 best waters you can drink for Sickle Cell.
This is the most easiest most accessible citrus fruit. Why is it at the top of the list? It goes a long way. Aside from making water more tasty, it is jam packed with vitamin c. Sickle Cell patients struggle with immunity. Sickle Cell suffers deficiency in iron. Our blood levels vary causing us to be chronically anaemic. In such a situation, it is difficult to ward off disease causing bacteria and harmful toxins from harming the body. Our defenses are low. We are susceptible to infection if we don’t take care of ourselves well with the food we eat. Lemon Water is the best water for Sickle Cell because of its Vitamins and minerals. Vitamin C from Lemon Water is something I have come to value so much to help with my immunity.
I realized a beautiful thing about Vitamin C. It helps with the absorption of Iron. It captures non – heme iron found in food and stores it in a form that is more easily absorbed by the body. Drinking lemon water or lemon juice helps increase our bodies absorption of iron. This reduces our anaemia.
The lemon is also a great alkalizer. Why is this important? It is alkaline forming once it enters the body, making the it more alkaline. It is a known fact that most disease causing bacteria if not all thrive in a body with very low pH. By drinking lemon water you ensure that you raise your pH levels. This is to maintain optimum body functions, balance and create environment that prevents growth of these bacteria and diseases.
Another huge cause for disease, especially if goes unchecked is mucous.
Mucous may seem like pretty straightforward helpful part of your body at first. However, if it becomes excessive it causes blockages, tumors, cysts, fibroids, etc. The worst kind is found in the gut. Especially when someone is on a heavy meat/dairy and gluten diet. It causes the lining of the gut to form thick black mucous that prevents proper digestion. This causes blockage which inhibits peristalsis that leads to reabsorption of stale, sometimes rotten food back into the body. Lemon water helps strip away some of this mucous from the body to prevent disease. However it takes more that just lemon water to clear everything out. It does help to detox a lot of these unwanted compounds.
In my Sickle Cell journey I have learnt to take my lemon water first thing every morning. This gives me a boost of energy form Vitamins and minerals from the lemon. It also prepare my digestive system to properly absorb the nutrients from foods I eat through out the day. The best thing for me is the detox properties. Lemon water helps eliminate toxins from the gut, organs like the liver and bloodstream. This helps so much in preventing build up of toxins that cause diseases. This further reduces jaundice causing bilirubin especially for those who have chronic jaundice and helps cleanse the liver.
Sickle Cell patients are prone to getting leg ulcers.
These are open wounds on the extremities of the legs that are difficult to heal. Since Vitamin C is associated with increased immunity, iron absorption, tissue growth and synthesis of collagen. The immune building vitamin helps prevent infection of wounds. Furthermore, the iron absorption of the body together with vitamin c improve collagen synthesis and formation of scar tissue to cover up wounds. Those with leg ulcers should to eat more Vitamin C, iron, copper and zinc rich foods for best results.
How To Make and Use Lemon Water
- Take 1-2 lemons and squeeze them into a 300-500ml glass mug.
- Add room temperature water to the glass and drink.
- Use this every morning when you rise up. It helps give a boost of energy and stimulates your digestive system.
This is the amazing fresh water that comes from a young green coconut. In my opinion, It is one of the purest sources of primo water we can find. For a person living with Sickle Cell like myself, this is the most purest richest source of electrolytes for the body. Electrolytes are minerals that carry electric charges in solution providing the capacity to conduct electricity. If one’s body is deficient on any of the key electrolytes the body is unable to perform its optimal functions. Everything works in your body because of your nerves abilities to send and receive electric signals from its neurones which is made possible by electrolytes. Your heartbeat, muscle movement, digestion etc are all made possible by these minerals. Coconut water is the easiest and best ways to get the electrolytes like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and sodium.
An incredible benefit of the coconut water is its ability is a natural isotonic.
Which means it contain same concentration of minerals and salts found in blood plasma. It has been used intravenously for over 60 years. And being a person who has received water and blood intravenously countless times in my life, this is a better prevention option for that. Coconut water is the best water for Sickle Cell because it is the best cure for chronic dehydration. It is best source of water to drink during long hot sunny days. If I happen to feel a crisis coming, I try to get Coconut water which helps prevent that. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that help with muscle soreness/pain that may cause Sickle Cell crises.
Speaking of acid, this baby is high on the pH scale. It will help you keep up your bodies pH reducing build up of mucus and keeps away many ailments. The foods we eat (especially if its cooked and/or animal based) has significantly less minerals i.e. potassium, magnesium and chloride; along with more sodium, compared to raw unadulterated natural foods. This results to metabolic acidosis.” In other words, the pH levels of many people’s bodies are low and no longer optimal.
In addition, many are suffering from low nutrient intake and problems such as potassium and magnesium deficiency.
This deficiency accelerates the ageing process. Moreover, it causes gradual loss of organ functions, and degenerates tissue and bone mass. High degrees of acidity force our bodies to rob minerals from the bones, cells, organs and tissues. In retrospect, the regular consumption of coconut water prevents this and improves availability of these essential nutrients and vitamins.
Where does one get the best water for Sickle Cell, Coconut water? Get the freshest water from a young green coconut. Avoid taking the packaged kind with all the preservatives. I try to take this 3 times a week to ensure regular intake of my electrolytes.
Sun Charged Water
Bottled Sunshine!!! This is water that is put in a glass jar and placed under the sun for a couple of hours. You’re able to get many of the benefits of the sun in a jar of water.
If you’re in a place with more than 4 hours of daylight, you can very easily make this best water. It is easier to get for people living in countries with lots of sun. Why is this is the best water for Sickle Cell? People living with Sickle Cell in Africa at different income ranges can get the benefits of this water.
This is probably the easiest, cheapest and straightforward water you can get or make.
How to Make Sun Charged Water
- Fill a clear glass jar or bottle of 1 to 2 liters of clean water and cover it. Make sure the jar has no plastic top.
- Place it under the sun straight onto the earth or a place you can receive direct sunlight of 5+ hours P.S Don’t place on grass or wood, it absorbs the sun energy. If you don’t have earth use pebbles, ceramic tile, sand etc.
- Wait for 5+ hours and use it immediately or within 24 hours.
- Store it on earth, tile, pebbles, cement floor to avoid discharging
Benefits of Sun Charged Water
Energy from the sun oxidizes the water molecules and makes oxygen readily available and usable to the body. This is beneficial in oxygenating the body which facilitates efficient body functions. Therefore, for people living with Sickle Cell, this helps prevent and treat crises while removing wastes and toxins like jaundice from the body.
Energy from the sun is transferred and stored in the water. Just like a battery, the sun charges water with its light energy and aligns water to a structure similar to what is in our cells. This water and energy becomes more useful and readily available for functioning of the cells and the body. This is one of the easiest ways to re-charge our body easily.
Putting water under the Sun helps in purifying contaminated water. The charging process allows purified molecules to be separated from bacterial water. Once this happens, specialized extractors can be used to collect pure water and discard contaminated water. This process allows the same thing to happen in our bodies. Bacteria is separated and removed through the process of adding sun charged water into our bodies. This means that Sun Charged water is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal which improves immunity and enhances healing of the body.
- Sleep Better
Like our skin, our internal body organs contain melanin. Our skin absorbs sun rays and light and stores that in melanin cells which is converted to energy for the body. The stimulation of melanin during the day by the sun causes the stimulation of melatonin during the night which helps one sleep better. The Sun energy stored in the water is also absorbed by the melanin centres contained in the bod. Therefore, the stimulation of melatonin at night also occurs thus improving sleep.
Sun-charged water can be used topically as well. It is anti-bacterial therefore it cleanses the faces by removing bacteria from the face. Since it is also oxygenated, it rejuvenates and renews skin cells to improve the overall glow of your skin. The oxygen also helps in cleansing of the face and removal of dirt and toxins. For better results, use sun charged water both inside and outside the body. Your cells will love you for this!!
